  2. First steps with Eddie
  3. For the best start with Eddie we’ve created this easy to follow setup & installation video for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlllQSMcNHM

You prefer a written manual over a video? No problem, check the Eddie User’s Manual for setup, print item, cartridge, PrintHub, Printing from a PC and Mac and Troubleshooting/Maintenance information.

      Did you know?
By default, most browsers offer to translate foreign language web pages with just one click. To use this feature, make sure you’ve activated it in the browser settings. (Click for an external Chrome and Safari explanation.)

Some more details needed? Primera prepared 25 minutes of an Eddie training video. It covers printing with BarTender, PrintHub settings and several key areas of the user’s manual to get started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGfvxppny9s

  4. Safety and Certifications
  5. When it comes to food of course safety and certifications are a big topic.
But certifications are not only required by law (e.g. Natasha’s Law in the UK or EU Regulation 1169/2011), but also lead to your customers trusting you and your food items.

Keep in mind, many so-called edible ink printers in the market are modified commercial desktop printers where no one guarantees any safety e.g. cross-contamination with the original toxic ink. Additionally, these printers use the usual parts such as printheads, that are in contact with the edible ink and are not approved for use with food materials. Also, these refilling ink systems take no easy way out as this leaves a breeding ground for bacteria. Read more selling points and get deeper insights in the Eddie White Paper.

  6. Food Certified Eddie Ink
  7. There are three different GMP and NSF certified ink types:

    • Edible Ink Cartridge – Europe (#053499)
    • Edible Ink Cartridge: Original Magenta – USA and Canada (#053498)
    • Edible Ink Cartridge: New Magenta – USA and Canada (#053507)

You might have heard of the “new magenta”. The story behind that is:

In Europe Carmoisine is approved and used in the 053499 cartridge which produces an excellent red dye.
In the US Carmoisine is not approved, that’s why the ink used in the 53498 cartridge produces an orange red. Therefore, in September the new US ink 053507 was announced, which produces a better red.

That being said, in Europe we’ve always had the best red and nothing changes for our customers and us.

For the exact EU CMY ink ingredients visit https://dtm-print.eu/europe/rohs/. The Kosher and Halal certificates are also listed.

Read Primera’s statement if the ink for Eddie is safe or certified for pets: https://customercare.primera.com/portal/en/kb/articles/is-the-ink-for-eddie-edible-ink-printer-safe-for-pets

  8. The Carousel
  9. ⟷ 89 – 105 mm
    ↕︎ 3 – 19 mm

As you know each Eddie comes with the circulating tray (carousel) which holds up to twelve e.g. 89 mm cookies. Each cookie is automatically drawn into the printer, one at a time. Once the print is finished it rotates and feeds & prints the next cookie, just like a carousel.

    Using the carousel step-to-step

    1. Install the carousel parts as shown in the videos
    2. Open your design file or scale & adjust the image in a software of your choice
    3. We recommend using a test sheet cardboard for the first prints to check the alignment.
      • Just cut out a circle in the size of your cookie, it should be above 3 mm.

    4. Press “Print” and get the printed result to check the offsets.
    5. Check the centring, adjust in PrintHub if needed. Repeat until you’re happy with the result.
      • PrintHub > Printer Settings > Label Offsets > Set Top of Form and Left Margin Offset
    6. Load the carousel with all 12 food items.
    7. Set the correct number for your print job and press “Print”
      • Number of Prints = Number of food items you want to have printed
        1. Once the item is printed it can be removed & replaced with an empty one
        2. Therefore you can print a lot more than 12 food items if you constantly insert new ones

This video shows how to print with the carousel base, using Swift Publisher on Mac.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wfe8BORMk_E?t=62

    Keep in mind:

Eddie centres print images on cookies automatically. Therefore, it’s mandatory the cookie touches two triangle spacers.

If the print is not centred for some reason, there’s help:

    Carousel Calibrating and Demo Mode

If you’re feeling the alignment or movement doesn’t run smoothly or properly, try calibrating:
Press and hold both buttons (Load/Unload and Pause) for 3 seconds. The Carousel Platter will make a 1 and ¼ revolution and calibration is completed!

Demo mode does the complete printing process movements, but without printing.
To place the printer in demo mode, press both buttons (Load/Unload and Pause) shortly. To exit, press Pause.

Sometimes the tongue/platform is hitting the carousel tray or isn’t centred properly.
It may also need calibrating and adjustment, view this article:
    https://customercare.primera.com/portal/en/kb/articles/the-tongue-platform-is-hitting-the-carousel-tray-eddie

  10. The DTM Carousel Trays
  11. ⟷ 0 – 67 mm
    ↕︎ 3 – 19 mm

To multiply your Carousel production, use the DTM Carousel Trays. The DTM Carousel Trays are easy to handle, clean and even dishwasher safe! There’s a variety of standard DTM Carousel Trays, see them in action at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scwjgLNuFIg

    Which carousel trays are available?

See all available carousel trays with exact measurements, video tutorials and templates to download online at: https://dtm-print.eu/en/pages/eddie-templates.html

Last but not least, see how easy the cleaning is: https://youtube.com/shorts/pebWYfb4aOE?feature=share

  12. The Platform Kit
  13. ⟷ 0 - 120 mm
    ↕︎ 30 - 60 mm ( with raiser 3 - 25.4 mm)

Just launched in October the platform kit replaces the standard platform and lets you print taller food items of up to 50.8 mm. That opens a new market for donuts, jumbo marshmallows, bars, bagels and even mini cakes!

To print taller food items, you might want to use the Platform Kit. The kit replaces the Eddie platform that came with the printer. Once installed the DTM Manual Trays can be used the same way as before with the manual feed with the single raiser mode.

Installation of the Eddie Platform Kit

is really easy, just follow the instructions at https://dtm-print.eu/en/brochures/Eddie-PlatformKit-Inlay.pdf or see the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kxPf8p-epc

  14. The DTM Manual Trays
  15. ⟷ 0 - 120 mm
    ↕︎ 2 – 27 mm

When it comes to smaller food items our DTM Manual Trays are a great add-on!
They allow you to print on a variety of treats, e.g. 5 macarons at once, in one printing process which speeds up and simplifies your production.
Just put the trays on top of the tongue of the manual tray or platform kit, both works.

The DTM Manual Trays are easy to handle, clean and even dishwasher safe!
There’s a variety of standard DTM Manual Trays (and also custom trays, all for € 29.95, read more below) see them in action and how to combine them at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oenQhcE55D0

Side note: You can still use the DTM Manual Trays with the platform kit installed!

Having 2-3 trays of the same type can be useful and sometimes offer a faster workflow as the carousel. Tray no. 1 is printing while tray no. 2 is getting prepared with e.g. 77 TicTacs, 64 M&Ms or 9 Mini Macarons. After printing is done tray no. 1 can be unloaded and packed while tray no. 2 is inserted for printing. At the same time tray no. 3 can be prepared and loaded with the food items.

    Which trays are available?

See all available trays with exact measurements, video tutorials and templates to download online at:
    https://dtm-print.eu/en/pages/eddie-templates.html

Using the DTM Manual Trays step-by-step

This video shows a step-by-step instruction how to use the trays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBToLUwd1wg

    1. Before to start with your DTM Manual Trays, disconnect and remove the carousel as shown in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3BeK8caOak
    2. Prepare your tray with the objects
    3. Settings in PrintHub
      • Check “Load Cookies Manually”
      • Uncheck “Cookie Centering Scan” (unless you’re using a tray which hasn’t objects in the centre e.g. M0012 for 4 cookies)
      • Uncheck “Scan large print area for multiple objects”
      • Set Feed and Reverse Speed (PrintHub > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings) to “20” to minimize the treats movement.
    4. After that download the template for your tray at: https://dtm-print.eu/en/pages/eddie-templates.html
      • The templates are available for NiceLabel, BarTender or Swift Publisher. Just double click the downloaded file to open.
      • Using a different software? Download the PNG file for use with other software.
    5. Place the design, scale & adjust the image
    6. When hitting the “Print” button the Eddie arm moves forward and both blue LEDs are flashing.
Wait for both lights to flash until you load the tray!
    7. Load the DTM Tray and Press the “Load/Unload” button to proceed.
    8. Check the centring, adjust in PrintHub if needed. Repeat until you’re happy with the result.
      • PrintHub > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Set horizontal and vertical offset

Important! When switching ON Eddie it calibrates, so no tray or object should be in there. If you switch it on with an inserted object, it will get a wrong calibration. This also applies if you have an error and switch off and back on the Eddie. It will calibrate again so the arm should be empty.

The print is not centred on the treats in the DTM Manual Trays, this article might help:
    https://customercare.primera.com/portal/en/kb/articles/how-to-print-cookies-of-any-shape-perfectly-centered-the-first-time-using-a-custom-tray-eddie

Scan large print area for multiple objects

The height scanning location of Eddie is in the middle of the platform/tongue.
When objects don’t sit in this normal height scanning location or the objects are slightly variable in height, enable “Scan large print area for multiple objects”.
It will now scan the entire tongue area for height and will set the topmost height of the objects to ensure taller items won’t be knocked off the tray while printing.
    More on that: https://customercare.primera.com/portal/en/kb/articles/what-is-the-scan-large

Tip: If your items have different height, place the highest in the middle, because the sensor searches only the middle point for the height, as the height scanning sensor only sees the area of the tongue.

For taller objects such as macarons adjust the “Top of Cookie Lift Offset” in PrintHub > Printer Settings > Advanced settings.
More tricks on how to print macarons with NiceLabel in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3BeK8caOak?t=69

    We also offer customised trays!

Everyone’s unique and so are food items!
If you have a special shape or want a special number of hollows in the tray, we can do that.
Just send us an e-mail at sales@dtm-print.eu, ideally with a sketch, photo of the objects and exact measurements. We’ll get in contact with you about the further processing.
And here comes the good part: Pricing is the same as for any other tray (€ 29.95)!

Buy 2 get 1 for free

Get 1 tray free of charge when ordering and registering your Eddie!
When buying a DTM Tray you get a second one free of charge. This promotion can only be applied once per Eddie. To process the tray order, you will receive an e-mail from my colleagues in sales after registering (at register.dtm-print.eu) the Eddie unit.
(As the trays can be combined, think about this offer.)

  16. Pricing and Calculations
  17. It always comes to the question “How many cookies can I print with my edible ink cartridge”?,
so keep these 6 facts in mind.

    1. The number of prints per cartridge may vary
and depend on coverage, saturation and what design you’re printing
    2. Treats printed in one batch will save ink
because the print head cleaning happens after each print job
    3. Keep printing when cartridge shows “low”
      – don’t change until you see a colour shift, it lasts longer than you expect!
    4. Printing just one colour affects cartridge life,
as a lot of only one colour is used
    5. PrintHub just estimates the costs,
it counts the spits of ink that are used without sensing the left ink in the cartridge
    6. Leave the printer powered on to keep your ink cartridge alive and avoid clogging.

    Read more at:
    https://customercare.primera.com/portal/en/kb/articles/how-many-cookies-can-i-print

Making numbers and calculations more tangible, see the cost comparison
which shows an average of random layouts and their pricing:
https://dtm-print.eu/en/brochures/Cost-Comparison-Eddie.pdf (update with prints/cartridge numbers follows)

  18. Stuck with an error?
  19. If you get a print error or print failure, you need to calibrate the Eddie without a tray and without an item loaded. To do a calibration, just restart the Eddie. If the error persists, make sure there is no cache saved for the driver. Unplug the USB cable from your computer as well, so the computer will reconnect to the Eddie.
